This is a famous temple known as Muthappan Madappura. The original seat of Muthappan is located on the western slope of Brahmagiri Hills. Festival is conducted at this place. Temporary sheds are constructed during festival days. Priests belong to Adiyar, a local tribal group. Lakhs of devotees participate in the festival. |

Famous temple and pilgrim centre of North Malabar. The temple follows peculiar customs and rites. Daily poojas are performed by Madayan, the senior-most member of Madappura family. On special occasions, Namboodiries are the priests. All devotees are served with free food every day. Muthappen Theyyam, the ritual offering,is performed in all days while other Theyyam are performed in a particular season. Dogs are considered as sacred here since it is believed that Muthappan while wandering was accompanied by a dog. Two images of dogs made of bronze are also there at the entrance of the temple. The offerings are served to the dogs found in front of the sanctum sanctorum. |
